Handmaiden Music: Handmaiden Music

Saul or David

(Elizabeth Stephens)
Leaders...you too have a decision to make...
We can be like Saul,
or we can be like David,
We live as kings, unto ourselves, or unto the Lord.

God can use us before and after our falls,
If we live, not unto ourselves, but unto the Lord.

Saul was a man who was seen as grand
In the eyes of the natural man

David, on the other hand, was invisible to man,
But was seen in the eyes of a supernatural God.

Saul and David both started with the favor of God
He Himself declared that they were “kings”.
They would rule and reign, make decisions for men,

But who recognized and obeyed the authority over “him”?

Saul or David?
Will you wait upon the Lord?
Saul or David?
Will you submit to the Spirit?
Saul or David?
Will you do it God's Way or your own?
Saul or David?
Which is stronger?
Fear of God or Fear of Man?
Saul or David?
Is your heart longing for the praise of God?
Saul or David?
Or the praise of man?
Saul or David?
Is humility a desire over authority?
Saul or David?
A Repentant heart or a hardened heart?
Saul or David?
Both would reap what they had sown.

But David feared his God, he trusted in His words, He committed his future into God’s hands,

And his decisions were made for the praise of one... and the people didn't dictate his decisions.

Both kings fell at one time into sin and condemnation,
But how they handled it, was what we must learn.
Stubborn denial or a hardened heart leads to loss of our favor,
Repentance means restoration and second chances.

Saul or David?

Who will you be like?

Saul or David?

Saul or David?

Will you recognize and obey the authority over you?

< Music Teacher Lesson

This song came as I was studying in my quiet time the first two kings of Israel, Saul and David, and comparing them and their relationship to God. Their stories begin in I Samuel, beginning around chapter 9, with Saul being chosen as the first king for Israel. Due to Saul’s failure to surrender to authority and his unrepentant heart, David was chosen by God to be the next king. Both were leaders, both fell into sin, both were given opportunity to repent and come under God’s authority. Yet only one knew intimacy with God, repented, and proved faithful….one “valued” his relationship with “his” authority and learned humility, even though he was “an” authority… he was man after God’s own heart. This was David.

I’m sure the song is not exhaustive in its lessons, but these questions were most certainly given me by the Holy Spirit for this hour and for you and I, the hearers. God most certainly wants us to “evaluate” our own hearts…and the questions to consider in the song cause us to get to “the heart of the matter” as far as where our maturity may have reached an impasse until dealt with.

I ask therefore that you take some time, and perhaps print this page out with the lyrics so that even away from the music, you may ponder the questions posed to you. They may also make good discussion questions for a bible study or family devotions time.

Will you wait upon the Lord?

If God is slow, in your opinion, to answer… will you take matters into your own hands? Or will you stand upon promises of His Word and wait patiently for His salvation?

Psalm 27:14
Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord.

Proverbs 20:22
Say not thou, I will recompense evil; but wait on the Lord, and he shall save thee.

Lament. 3:26
It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the Lord.

Will you submit to the Spirit?

If the Spirit within you tells you to, or not to, do something, will you submit to his still small voice? Will you let people’s opinions, or worldly pressures, or others cause you to turn from what you know to be right? Is your obedience joyful or rebelliously given in that submitting?

Romans 8:14
For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

Will you do it God’s way or your own?

Part of what Saul did was do God’s will, his own way… He thought he knew better how to follow the “general idea” of what God wanted. We must do God’s Work, God’s way, or it isn’t as He pleases. We can’t do it our way, or we will be most certainly in pride, presumption, procrastination or some other form of disobedience.

Psalm 25:9 “The humble He guides in justice, And the humble He teaches His way.”

Which is stronger?

Fear of God, or fear of man?

As a general rule, Saul feared man more than God (man’s pressure caused him to not wait for Samuel but took the high priest’s role which was not his to take; he wanted to have man’s praise his whole life, not God’s, this is why he was so jealous of David’s popularity when he heard their opinions), yet David feared God more than man (as a youth he opposed Goliath who dared defy his God! He refused to harm Saul, God’s anointed…later on in life he stripped down and danced before the Lord to please God alone).

We, too, must ask the question? Are we afraid what people will think?
Especially loved ones? If suddenly we begin living and speaking for the Lord?

John 5:44
How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only?

Is your life submitted to God’s authority and those whom he has set over us?

Each of us has an authority… we are not to our own. Wives submit to husbands, husbands to God, children to parents, workers to employers, countrymen to leadership, etc.

Yet lawlessness (a sign of our times) is saying to ones self… I don’t need to submit to anyone or anything. It is rampant, and yet it is not as Jesus taught us.

Let me share a couple verses here that fall under this matter:

Hebrews 13:17 (KJV)
Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.
(This is referring to our spiritual leaders.)

James 4:7 (KJV)
Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. (The only way to resist the devil is to first be submitted to God.)

1 Peter 2:13-3:1 (KJV)
Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme; [14] Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well. [15] For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men: [16] As free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God. [17] Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king. [18] Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward. [19] For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully. [20] For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God. [21] For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: [22] Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth: [23] Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously: [24] Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed. [25] For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.
[3:1] Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives;

(The above passage is FULL of the various types of submission that God is pleased with.)

1 Peter 5:5 (KJV)
Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.

(Not just “motherly advice”: Young people, even though God is moving among you spiritually, do not forget this command about respecting and submitting to those older in age to you. It is pleasing to God, for though there is no age as far as God speaking revelation to you and using you, men can give you much wisdom from life experience…and it will bless you to remain open to “hearing” their counsels. Remember, God can speak to you through “anyone”.)

Is your heart longing for the praise of God?
Or the praise of men?

Here is a verse that is in direct address of this:

John 12:42, 43
Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue: For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.

John 5:44
How can ye believe, which receive praise from one of another, yet make no effort to receive praise that comes from the only God?

Is humility a desire over authority?

Did you realize God requires the humility BEFORE giving you the honor of carrying his authority?

Proverbs 15:33
The fear of the Lord is the instruction of wisdom; and before honour is humility.

Proverbs 18:12
Before destruction the heart of man is haughty, and before honour is humility.

A repentant heart? Or a hardened heart?

A hardened heart blinds us to God’s authority to involve himself in our daily affairs, and focuses instead on the cares of the world. A repentant heart enables us to continue “receiving” from the Holy Spirit, and as long as we can keep in communications, change IS taking place, I assure you. Also what we speak will determine if our heart is hard or repentant. Listen to your words this week, and the Spirit will reveal to you your heart. Trust me. Out of the heart the mouth speaks. (Matt 12:34)

Jeremiah 15:19
Therefore thus says the LORD: If you turn back, I will take you back, and you shall stand before me. If you utter what is precious, and not what is worthless, you shall serve as my mouth. It is they who will turn to you, not you who will turn to them.

Be wise. It is truth. We will reap what we sow. This includes both bad and good. Sometimes we actually are more aware of the bad sowing, than being encouraged by our good sowing and the promise that brings us. Yet any sowing of evil will reap the consequences as well, in our own lives…and this includes ignoring the still small voice in what we’d deem “tiny” matters.

Job 4:8
Even as I have seen, they that plow iniquity, and sow wickedness, reap the same.

Hosea 10:12
Sow for yourselves righteousness; reap steadfast love; break up your fallow ground; for it is time to seek the LORD, that he may come and rain righteousness upon you.

I’m sure the Lord will speak to you in his own way through this song.
I am not the Holy Spirit…only giving you some help to better hear him.
This is all a matter of the heart, and a matter between you and God. I just encourage you to give THE MATTER …. ..THOUGHT……for I believe the timing of this song, is important in your life, and mine. God is faithful to give you additional insights about what pleases him…what will give you favor, second chances, and new beginnings. God is all about Grace and Mercy, yet it usually needs to be given to a repentant seeker…one who will simply come humbly to Him for this favor.
